Sundance? Really?

A big part of the whole American Idol experience these days is to check the predictions board over at Dial Idol after the voting has closed each week, but not so much to see who is getting kicked off, because it’s much too early in the season for those predictions to be accurate. Indeed, the lowest vote-getter at Dial Idol has been safe each week so far. So there’s no way to accurately tell who’s going home, not until the herd has been thinned a bit. The margin of error is just too great right now.
But Dial Idol has turned out to be an invaluable tool to see who is popular and definitely safe each week. So when the show tries to fake you out, by pairing an eliminated person with a popular person, like they did last night, you can see right through the ruse. Did anyone really think Sanjaya was in danger? I mean, besides Sanjaya himself?
But the biggest shock to me has been the popularity of Sundance Head. Sure, I though he was great in his first audition way back in January, but he has crapped it up repeatedly since then, and only barely redeemed himself this week. I have come to dislike a great many things about Sundance. So why, then, is he listed as the most popular guy for two weeks in a row? And the most popular contestant overall this week? Boggling.

I think it’s also kind of funny/sad how Paula Abdul has bought into the lie of the show and really still believes it’s a singing competition. Honey, open your eyes. If nothing in the past six years of this show has proven to you that it’s not, no matter how badly you in your quixotic little heart may want it to be, then the fact that Sanjaya is the second most popular guy should convince you once and for all. Especially after that…thing he did on Tuesday night. I hesitate to call it a performance, or a song, or any other English word, really. It was just a thing, that he did, and it really doesn’t matter because he’s kinda cute, and he has floppy hair, and he’s the only teenage boy in the competition, and all of those things are going to keep him in the running for a very long time, no matter how much he sucks at singing.
But not as long as Sundance is going to last, who, unless he comes out attacking gays or something, I despair is going to win this thing.
